Maths:
We are starting some work on length this week. Our key language for today’s lesson is tall, taller, short, shorter.
Every day we complete a whole class activity to begin our lesson. We call this time Maths Action.
Today’s Maths Action is as follows:
Place two pieces of string/ ribbon/ tape horizontally on the table or floor. Both pieces of string must start from the same point. Ask a number of questions: Are the pieces of string the same length/longer/shorter, etc. Now place the pieces of string vertically and use the language of tall/taller, etc.
Extension: Use different starting points to see if your child gives the same answers and cut different lengths of string and arrange them.
Activity 1: What is Shorter than 10 Cubes? (building blocks, lego, bricks can be used too)
Place 8 cubes, Uni-fix cubes or multi-links together in a line. Find objects at home that are shorter than that. Line them up beside the cubes.
Extension: Your child can use lines of 10/15 cubes, Uni-blocks or multi-links, together.
Written Activity: Busy at Maths. Pg 56
Colour the taller items green and the shorter items blue.
Phonics:
Activity 1: Revise over sounds all ready covered this year.
Check and see if your child can remember all the sounds from the grid below!
Activity 2: Using the following sounds, how many cvc (3 letter words) words can you make?
You can write these words or use playdough, magnetic letters to make these words also.
I challenge you to come up with at least 5 words!!
Just Phonics: pg. 17
Focus on the sound/letter ‘e’
Activity 1: draw 3 pictures of words containing the letter e.
Activity 2: Match each picture that begins with e to the big e. X the odd ones out.
Activity 3: Circle all the e letters on the envelope.
Let’s Discover: Staying warm in Winter pg. 26
