SESE:

The photograph you saw at the top of the page today is a picture of 'The Giant's Causeway' in Co. Antrim. Some of you may have been there before and will recognise the strangely shaped rocks! The story you are going to read today is a story that has been told from many many years ago. I want you to listen to the story and read along with me if you like, then I want you to draw in the pictures on p. 52/53/54. Do not worry about part B and C on p. 54, these are optional, you do not have to do them!

Grow in Love:

I want you to watch the video below and chat about the various questions. These are very important things to remember as you prepare for your First Holy Communion.

In the video, you will see the priest praying over the bread and wine, and asking the Holy Spirit to come upon them and change them so that they become the Body and Blood of Christ.

You will then hear the priest telling the story of what happened at the Last Supper.

After watching the video:

  • What did you see the people do immediately after they finished singing the Holy Holy? (They kneeled... Why do you think they did this?)
  • What did you hear the priest say? When have you heard those words before? The priest and the people gathered are doing exactly what Jesus asked his friends to do: 'Do this in memory of me.'
  • What do you think will happen during the next part of the Mass?

When Jesus was at the Last Supper, he said 'This is my body' and 'This is my blood'. We believe that, at every Mass, God's spirit comes upon the ordinary bread and wine to make it become something extra-ordinary. It becomes the body and blood of Christ which we receive in Holy Communion. When we receive in Holy Communion, we grow in friendship with God and with one another.

I want you to have a chat with the person that is helping you do your work today about these questions:

  • Once the priest has blessed the bread, does it still look the same as it did before? Do you think it still tastes the same as it did before? What has changed?
  • Once you receive Holy Communion, Jesus is with you in a new and special way. He will be close to you in a way he never was before. What do you think of that?
