Goodmorning everyone,

I hope to see you all at the Zoom call today at 10am.

Maths:

  1. Master Your Maths Friday test (week 20) p. 85
  2. Number Facts p.67 - Assessment C ONLY column 1
  3. Busy at Maths p. 77 Q1-3

English:

  2. Let's Talk Literacy p. 60 - Alphabetical order - Have a look at the video below which will help you with this task. We must put the letters and words on p. 60 in alphabetical order (the order that they come in the alphabet when we sing the alphabet song!
  3. Watch the video of 'The Salmon of Knowledge' below and answer the following questions with whoever is helping you with your work today:
  • Did you hear any words about learning in  the story? (Questions, wise, learn, knowledge)
  • Did Fionn go to a school like you?
  • How did Fionn learn?
  • What kind of knowledge did Fionn get?
  • When we have knowledge, what do we have? (Information about something)
  • Where do we get our knowledge?
  • If someone has a lot of knowledge we say that they are wise. Your parents are very wise and they pass on some of their wisdom to you. Ask your parents to share one piece of wisdom with you.
  • Besides going to school, is there any other way that we can get knowledge?
  • Would you like to be able to get all the knowledge in the world by putting your thumb in your mouth?
  • Do you think this is a true story? Why not?

The Salmon of Knowledge is what we call a 'legend'. It is a story that was passed on to us from long ago.

  1. Fuaimeanna agus Focail Friday spelling test (aonad 20)

SPHE:

Last week we were looking at water safety around the home and on a farm. You came up with 5 water safety rules to keep us all safe around water at home and on the farm. This week, we are looking at water safety at the beach/ lake/ river/ canal.  I want you to discuss these questions with whoever is helping you to do your work today:

Have you ever had a day out/ holiday near the water? Where were you? What did you do?

Have you ever seen anyone behaving carelessly around water? What did you see? Why do you think this was careless behaviour? What could have happened?

Can you remember some of the water safety rules that you came up with last week? Are any of those rules important to remember when you are by the pool, a lake, a river, a canal or at the beach?

Can you think of some rules for safe water behaviour in any of these places?

Did you know?

Observe any signs. These signs might tell you where it is safe to swim, where it is dangerous to swim or they might tell you that there is a lifeguard on duty.

A red flag means that swimming is dangerous in that area.

Only swim or do water sports when you are with an adult.

Obey the lifeguard. Always do as they say.

Always swim parallel to the shore (swim across, do not swim out towards the ocean).

NEVER take inflatable toys or li-lo’s into the sea. These can only be used in a safe swimming pool.

Always wear a lifejacket while in a boat.

Can you remember our sinking and floating experiment that you did with the oranges and bananas and making your own boat. That experiment showed us how some things float when they contain air. Inflatable toys and li-lo’s are filled with air and float on the water at the beach, in the pool etc. However, as we have learned, it is very dangerous to bring these inflatable toys to the beach as they risk floating far out to sea with you on top!

We know that lifejackets must be worn when we are in a boat and lifebuoys are so important to save someone’s life if they are in difficulty in the water and can not swim any longer due to tiredness or injury.

Do not push, shove or fool around when walking by a river or a canal or when at a swimming pool.

Stay on the path by a river or a canal.

Do not try to retrieve toys or pets from the water.

NEVER vandalise life-saving equipment.

NEVER swim in an unfamiliar place.

What could happen if you do not obey these rules?

I have included a worksheet 'Lesson 2 - Spot the dangers' below.  I want you to point out what the dangers are in this picture and what they should be doing to be more careful around the water.
