Grow in Love:
In this video, we see the priest breaking the bread. Soon after, it is shared with the people.
Questions after video:
- Have you ever seen anyone receive Holy Communion? Have you ever received Holy Communion? Why not?
- What do you notice about the way in which the people walk to the priest to receive Holy Communion? Are they talking to each other? Why are they being so quiet?
- Who gives Holy Communion to the people at Mass? Do people help the priest? Do you know anyone who helps the priest to give Holy Communion to the people at Mass?
There are certain ways we can prepare to receive Jesus in Holy Communion:
- Fast for an hour before we receive Holy Communion.
- Say a special prayer before we receive Holy Communion – This prayer is called the Prayer before Communion.
- Join our hands when we walk up the aisle to receive Holy Communion.
- Make sure that our hands are clean.
- Hold out our hands in a special way to receive Holy Communion – left hand over right (if you are right-handed) or right hand over left (if you are left-handed).
- Pray in silence after receiving Holy Communion. There is a special prayer we say called the Prayer after Communion.
The actions of the priest at Mass, mirror the actions of Jesus at the Last Supper, when he took the bread, blessed it, broke it and shared it. At Mass, the bread and wine are changed, and Jesus becomes present to us in a real way under the appearance of bread and wine. That is what we receive in Holy Communion – the real presence of Jesus. We do so with great respect. After Holy Communion we can talk to Jesus and tell him that we love him and that we want to live like him. We can also tell him about anything that is worrying us and anything that we want to pray for.
I want you to complete p. 38 and 39 in Grow in Love and have a listen to the song below which explains what happened at the Last Supper.
